Wally, your letter was spot on. Unfortunately, smug, moralistic Canadians seem to have gotten things a tad confused. Canadian morality seems to have morphed from "all human beings are equal" to "all cultures are equal and equally valuable".
I beg to differ. I have lived in over 20 countries in my adult lifetime. My experience tells me that cultures are NOT all equal to one another, and that the world could do quite well WITHOUT particular cultures altogether. Hnece, the idea of "cultural retention in a multicultural Canada" is both intellectually invalid and problematic from the outset.
But shooting themselves in the foot seems to be a Canadian specialty. How else could such a resource-rich country remain so identifiably mediocre over such a sustained period of time?

Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somalian woman, who fled to the West, said as much -- all cultures are not equal.
